The Social Network is a very good film. I'd give it an 8 out of 10. Everything from Aaron Sorkin's smartly written and fast-paced script to the spot-on portrayal of Facebook CEO Mark Zuckerberg's personality and mannerisms by actor Jesse Eisenberg take what could have been a very bland movie about the creation of a website, and turn it into a cinematic tour-de-force. As an avid cinephile, I love that they don't dumb down the film for the lowest common denominator of moviegoer. It's one of the only movies that shows an accurate portrayal of computer programming and hacking, without it going over the heads of the non-techie. The underlying audio score, written by Trent Reznor (of Nine Inch Nails fame) is a driving force in the movie, and compliments the visuals amazingly well. I defy most people not to be moved by its intensity, especially during the crew race scene.
The only down points other critics have mentioned about this film are the inaccuracies of the film as compared to the real life events of Facebook's founding, as well as a critical eye on the portrayal of women in certain scenes. The inaccuracies were a moot point for me, since Sorkin and director David Fincher were clearly looking to create a compelling story, rather than simply regurgitate the events as they actually unfolded; a feat at which I believe they well succeeded.
I would definitely recommend the film. As a source of reference, I would give a movie like 'Killer Clowns from Outer Space' or 'Vulgar' as a 1 out of 10 (more like a 0, really) and a movie such as 'The Shawshank Redemption' or 'Inception' as a 10 out of 10.
