We're trying to buy products that have minimal or no packaging - in this house, we're big Lush fans (especially me! Hah!) And their unwrapped and minimally wrapped items are excellent stocking stuffers - soaps, shampoo bars, bath bombs and the like. We mostly exchange stocking stuffer gifts in my house, so those aren't gift wrapped.
For items that do require gift wrapping, I try to use as little disposable stuff as I can. I give reusable tins to give edible gifts. If the tins get returned they get refilled each year. Trust me, all of my husband's coworkers return the tins! I re-use glass jars to give mix-in-a-jar gifts, and they don't need any wrapping more than a beautiful ribbon and tag. We save and re-use gift bags to avoid paper waste - they remain beautiful for a number of years. Paper shreds make a great alternative to tissue in the bags.
Our families live far away, and we skype rather than have anyone fly or drive to visit. That part is mostly economy, but partly environmental. I feel guilty travelling too much in a year and using so much of a carbon footprint.
