I haven't personally experienced menopause yet but I am experiencing perimenopause, which is the time period (usually about 8-10 years) leading up to menopause. Since I began experiencing symptoms, I've been reading and researching a lot on the topic.

While many of the symptoms vary from woman to woman, sore breasts seem to be a common complaint among perimenopausal, menopausal and postmenopausal women. Hormonal changes can cause breast pain and tenderness (think back to your PMS and pregnancy days). Breast pain is often due to hormonal imbalances or an overabundance of estrogen. When a woman's body goes through the major changes taking place during menopause, hormones can be all out of whack and cause all kinds of interesting (and miserable) symptoms.

There are a few things women can do to relieve breast pain: reduce salt and caffeine intake, eat more fiber and green leafy vegetables to help rid the body of excess estrogen, take evening primrose oil supplements, try lightly massaging the area and apply warm compresses.

I would also recommend speaking to your physician if you haven't had a recent mammogram and the pain persists.

Here a few links that offer more details on the causes of breast pain and suggestions on how to relieve the pain.
