I'm a little confused. Aren't changelings human children taken by gnomes and fairies and whatnot? If so, once they snatched the human child, converted it into a changeling, wouldn't they keep it? That would mean that the only way you could have personal contact is if you hang out with the fairy and gnome set, which is crazy awesome, actually. I am not wise in the ways of these things, so I'm perplexed as to a changeling being reintroduced into human society. She might be a changeling reject. If so, you might want to rethink the friendship. Does she have goals? A life plan? I do not know of an acid test without asking directly. Maybe a round-about approach. "Wanna wand for your birthday?" "Do you have wing scars?"

I do understand that there is a notion that the fairies gave one of their own in exchange, but not always. If your friend is a fairy replacement, she might exhibit great strength (changeling perk). Or, she might appear to be waif-like when in reality, she might be a really old fairy in a kid bod. It was a nice benefit for geriatric fairies to live out their days being reared by loving human parents. Either way, if she's scrawny, the reverse changeling concept is dubious. Again, the round about approach..."You seem like an old soul. Are you a fairy?"

Best of luck. If she is a changeling, one way or another, she'll need a supportive human friend. You are a human, are you not?

3) If the nursing home won't let them out, try an old priest and a young priest

There is no way to find out without sounding wierd. Let's go with honesty is the best policy. You may lose a friend though. I'm not sure I could hang out with anyone that thought I was a changeling.

A changeling is a creature found in Western European folklore and folk religion. It is typically described as being the offspring of a fairy, troll, elf or other legendary creature that has been secretly left in the place of a human child. Sometimes the term is also used to refer to the child who was taken. The apparent changeling could also be a stock or fetch, an enchanted piece of wood that would soon appear to grow sick and die. The theme of the swapped child is common among medieval literature and reflects concern over infants afflicted by as-then unknown diseases, disorders, or mental retardation.

A human child might be taken due to many factors: to act as a servant, the love of a human child, or malice. Most often it was thought that fairies exchanged the children. Some Norwegian tales tell that the change was made to prevent inbreeding: to give trolls and humans new blood, humans were given children with enormous strength as a reward. In some rare cases, the very elderly of the Fairy people would be exchanged in the place of a human baby, and then the old fairy could live in comfort, being coddled by its human parents. Simple charms, such as an inverted coat or open iron scissors left where the child sleeps, were thought to ward them off; other measures included a constant watch over the child.
