You can't really say they're the most common worldwide animal because they only exist in the Western Hemisphere. In the eastern hemisphere, they have similar animals called possums.

This answer is all mixed up. Asker is asking about the Virginia Opossum, which is also called the Common Opossum. This is different than the South American animal called a Common Opossum. The possums of Australia are quite different.
