The "up" volume button on my iPhone 3Gs no longer works. Any suggestions on how to fix it?

The down volume button also works just fine. When I plug in the headset, the "up" and "down" volume buttons work just swimmingly. The sliders with in the iPod, or Youtube apps also work as normal. I have tried restarting it and that hasn't helped. Any suggestions?

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

Three possible ways to solve this problem are given below

1. Try invoking the recovery mode. Turn off the disconnected iPhone, pressing for around 5 s the “Sleep/Wake” button. Then slide the red slider. Then press and hold “Home”and connect to either your PC or Mac which has iTunes installed on it. Continue holding the button until the docking cable shows the iTunes symbol and then you can release the button. If the iTunes isn't already open, open it. You will get the message that the iPhone is in recovery mode. Then click ok, whereupon you will be sent to the iPhone window, where you should click "restore" which finishes the process.

2. Sometimes this may not work, in that case you use the Direct Firmware Upgrade (DFU) mode. Plug in your phone and switch it off. Simultaneously press the home and Sleep/wake buttons for around 12 s. A logo will show up and then the phone will seem to turn back off. Let go of the sleep/wake buttom, while continuing to press the home button, waiting untile there is an iTunes message that says it detects an iPhone in recovery. Select restore and this will fix it.

3. Last possibility: You may need to schedule an appointment with the genius bar at apple.com/retail if this doesn't solve your problem.
