The Simpsons

The social commentary is much more sophisticated in the Simpsons. It is based on well developed characters, they all have their own foibles and I think we often see people who are instantly recognised as a "Nelson" or a "Bart". They are far easier to relate to and thus get the social message across.

For example each character has often highlighted a social issue by their behaviour
Why does Lovejoy find Ned infuriating?
Why is Dr Nick even allowed to practice medicine?
When you meet Nelson's mother and see where he lives you stop wondering about his aggression
Why is Smithers portrayed the way he is, does it go to show intolerance and fear of being different?
Why does Maggie never speak? Is she the 'observer' for the audience?
Even Santa's Little Helper, the true friend that a child needs

I'm always astonished by how much the Simpsons get away with really, its more hard hitting than many realise. All they see is a comedy that's getting old, they have forgotten why its lasted so long. Its writing is subtle and invasive, but tinged with humor so you don't get upset, you just learn.

Now a talking fish and a strange alien are funny and do have the same sort of role as other characters ( social commentary ) but its not as believable and thus not as hard hitting for thinking about stuff, its humor you dismiss rather than ponder. Mind you I do like Family Guy but it gets a bit boring and disjointed for my liking....

Come on, how many know a "Comic Book Guy"?

Family Guy every time.

For me The Simpsons was played out around 2000-2002 after that I was no longer getting the laughs I used to and found myself instinctively changing the channel while I was watching it.. not on a commercial.. just button pushing without thinking only because my subliminal was telling me.. "man this is boring".

To me the humor in Family Guy is more my style. It is more edgy and more risky, and well..more funny period. I laugh like when I first started watching The Simpsons back 20 years ago. Homer has had his day and Bart.. well I just don't find his pranks that funny anymore..Lisa's quirky geeky intellect no longer makes me feel inferior to an 8 year old and.. the only thing left of the funny in The Simpsons is Ralphy Wiggum. Ralphy.. I could watch all day and he should have had his own spin-off years ago. I ate the purple berries too.

Now is the time of Peter Griffin, Stewie, Brian, Lois, Quagmire (giggity giggity), and Cleveland etc etc. .. now is the time of Family Guy. Cleveland rightfully has got his own spin off and in my eyes is doing well.. I would rather watch The Cleveland Show over The Simpsons too.

Family guy = Belly busting laughs.
Simpson's = maybe a smile, at best.

It's pretty clear that the Simpson's are just not that funny anymore. The pressure on Matt Groening & of course money from Fox is the only thing that keeps it from dying these days.

I enjoy them both.
Really Family Guy is just a newer Simpsons.
The Simpsons have seemed to kind've, I don't know how to put it... I suppose die down over the years. But what do you expect, that show's been around for EVERRRR. To me Family Guy's just new take on things, so I'd have to say my Favorite is Family Guy. Though the Simpsons will always be loved. :p

The Simpsons. The quality has reduced over the years but it's still far better than Family Guy. I've watched only a dozen or so Family Guy episodes and am already tired of it.

The Simpsons all the way.
Family guy is too perverse and random for me. Random, in a not so funny way, it's almost predictable.
It's like a bunch of middle school boys write the script on the bus heading home from school.

Okay so i don't believe anyone can argue that the Simpsons is a classic and it shall go down in history as the beginning of wacky and hilarious cartoon comedy. as he years went on of coarse people are going to try to imitate it or 1 up it to be the next big thing. i don't believe anything could of taken its place like family guy did. the Simpsons dominated for 15 years plus easy and still holds pretty fairly well in this day and age. but family guy is surely the cooler more popular kid on the block its the new flashy toy that people cant get enough of. every episode is original in its own way. despite the fact that it dose not have a true story line dose not affect its reputation as the best cartoon comedy on the air at this very moment. all the characters are amazing they all pull you in as if you were sitting on the couch next to peter. we can all relate something someone in this show to our lives. but you probably shouldn't take much of a life lesson from them HAHA.

in the end family guy is the best indeed. while the Simpsons still has its place in history and i the back of our minds as the original.

~FIN~

Family Guy. Because its crude and disgusting, whereas The Simpsons is a little bit too clean cut for my liking.

I used to love Family Guy but now that it plays reruns on about 10 different channels every day at 5pm, I can't even stand the voices.

The Simpsons, while not as die hard offensive, is still a great show that might even incorporate a moral to some of their stories. Family Guy is like South Park was at first. A great show but it's simply getting overdone. Don't get me started on Cleveland Show...but I still like American Dad...weird.

It would have to be The Family Guy. I like the way it takes on subjects that we all think about but are hesitant to discuss.
The Simpsons will always hold its place as the first such show and as the one that broke the ground for all others.
