The NDM-1 gene grants bacteria resistance to "last resort" carbapenem antibiotics. How many people a year require this antibiotic?
The NDM-1 gene apparently only effects a bacteria's resistance to the carbapenem family of antibiotics. This means that past prescription statistics could plausibly predict the number of people who would be affected by this new resistance. Given it's common use as a last resort, can we estimate the possible impact this will have?
