2 years, 1 month ago about How to Become an Evangelical Pastor

The joy of the Lord is my strength! Please discuss.

What does this mean to YOU?
Do you have any TIPS or can share any IDEAS that could help others experience this?
Can you also include any links, videos, photos, stories, experiences to illustrate your answers?
Of course for Net safety as usual, do not include identifying information.

(As usual, I reserve the right to sprinkle answers with tips if I so choose, and you are welcome
to do so also).

I would like to acknowledge that inspiration for this question comes from the following 3 places:

1. A blessing that Pastor Margaret Court sent to the Richard and
Lindsay Roberts show Hour of Healing last night via phone
upon her return to Australia after she had been
a guest on their show in Tulsa, Oklahoma some days earlier.

2. The title of my question was taken from a ministry product in
the River Church http://www.revival.com bookstore that I have not seen yet.
This church is pastored by Drs. Rodney Howard-Browne and Adonica Howard-Browne.
They can also be found sharing key nuggets on Facebook. Here is their
most recent post to Facebook linked through the official Twitter account
http://twitter.com/rhowardbrowne
"Purifying oneself It is important that we keep ourselves pure -
that we do not practice sin as a way of life - it..." http://bit.ly/a6bnkk

3. An interesting, I thought, link between the two was that last weekend,
when Dr. Richard Roberts gave a guest Sunday night live online healing sermon at
the River Church, he acknowledged that this teaching had been a blessing
to him since the early 1990's.

The Joy of the Lord is My strength. I cannot forget this song when I was just in College and active in church organizations. We used to sing this during our time of worship. I may have been naive inexperienced at that time that the true words had not sank in deep in the recesses of my mind. But everything changed when I experienced a tragic accident with my mother, brother, and sister-in-law.

We almost lost our lives in that accident especially my mom and my sister-in-law who had to undergo two operations. It is very difficult to be joyful and hopeful during that time of crisis in my life. All I can remember was seeing my mother lying on the stretcher fighting for her life in the emergency room and I have to muster all the strength to pray to God to help me accept whatever will be that His will be done. But deep inside I know that I am expecting the worst but still hoping for the best. And I remembered asking Him to help me accept whatever His will. I offered to my Father everything.

I believe that this act is a wisdom from God that whatever happens that I should not forget to call His name. I feel His reassuring hands that in spite of the bad thing that happen He will not abandon me. I am at peace in a way that although that tragic accident had to happen to us I was able to thank and praise God for saving our lives. I believe that the Holy Spirit gave me the wisdom to see and feel that God is a loving God and that He is with us through joy and definitely with us in our pain.
I was not wrong because it was manifested through the help of the people who surrounds us.There were many friends who helped us and offered their time and prayers to help us recover fully.

I remembered what our leader in our parish told us that we should not only praise God during our times of happiness but also during the times of trials for by doing so He will give us strength. And to be honest, I still had doubts and I had a question in my mind which troubled me for some time, how can we praise the Lord when we are in pain and why do we have to do that? Is it possible?

Now, I know the answer to these questions. For praising and worshipping him at times when it is very hard to do is an affirmation of your faith in God the Father. And he is a Father who is always there and just waiting for His children to call on to Him.
By giving Him praise and doing my part as a Christian will strengthen my faith in Him that no matter how deep the pain of my suffering I will be able to persist for His love will give me strength. That by pleasing God and doing His will this will give me the strength to endure any life's suffering. This is the kind of strength that Job had when all was taken away from him and he still did not lose faith in God.
That even if I have a faith of a mustard God will still love and continue to guide me through life.

I thank God for all the wisdom and until my last breath in this borrowed life He generously gave me, I will continue to sing praises to Him. And I will live my live in accordance to His will because I know that by pleasing God this will not only strengthen my faith to overcome whatever obstacles but it will also be a testimony of God's never ending love and grace.

----quote---
---quote---
I will bless Your name, Your holy name
Though some situations make me cry
I will not be grieved, but rejoice in the Lord
For this I know, this I know
Joy of the Lord is my strength

Alot of you people are discussing an imaginary person ('The Lord') and an imaginary supernatural being ('God') as if they are real! They are not!
Anyone who thinks different is delusional!

I find it quite alarming that so many people are so plainly delusional and others accept this delusion as being 'okay', 'harmless'.
The belief in this imaginary supernatural being has been the cause of so many wars, so much suffering and the spread of so much misinformation it beggars belief.
ALL of the so called 'leaders' (Pastors etc) are nothing but con-artists and shamen. NONE of the so called power they profess to have exist, except in your imagination.

http://everything2.com/title/Why+religion+is+bad
"Religion is bad because it stunts intellectual growth and cripples human interaction; because it is an engine of control and oppression (mostly of women), and because it alienates people from the real, physical world and all its wonders. It narrows horizons, engenders isolation and fear, and strives in most cases to limit and control the experience and value of emotional, sexual and physical pleasure. "

"It's a good thing I dont have religion.."

1. (noun) religion
the outward act or form by which men indicate their recognition of the existence of a god or of gods having power over their destiny, to whom obedience, service, and honor are due; the feeling or expression of human love, fear, or awe of some superhuman and overruling power, whether by profession of belief, by observance of rites and ceremonies, or by the conduct of life..... (http://www.definitions.net/definition/religion)

You see this is the problem with people who fantasize they "have a personal relationship" with supernatural beings and should really seek psychiatric guidance.
As C.S. Lewis said what "a great cataract of nonsense".

Instead of praying for me, try this.."Dear God, almighty, all-powerful, all-loving creator of the universe, we pray to you to cure every case of cancer on this planet tonight. We pray in faith, knowing you will bless us as you describe in Matthew 7:7, Matthew 17:20, Matthew 21:21, Mark 11:24, John 14:12-14, Matthew 18:19 and James 5:15-16. In Jesus' name we pray, Amen."

I shall expect cancer to be cured by the morning! ('Ask, and it will be given')
Or praying DOES NOT WORK because there is NO SUCH THING AS 'GOD'!
http://www.boston.com/news/globe/health_science/articles/2005/07/25/a_prayer_for_health/

http://www.godisimaginary.com/index.htm

So please, less of the false piety and there DOES NOT have to be 'something greater' it is in your imagination (or cancer will be cured by god in the morning because you are goiny to pray for it tonite!)

It's a good thing I dont have religion.. But I do have a personal relationship with God. And i'll be praying for your salvation because i cannot stand to see a lost soul. If anyone thinks that this is all there is to life, I'm so sorry for them because we have a spirit inside of all of us. This body is just that: a body. Without a spirit our body cannot function. When we die, our bodies go back to the earth. There has to be something greater than us that designed such an intricate process of life and death.

Yes, it is real. The joy of the Lord is our real strength. With God, everything is possible and nothing is impossible. And this joy can only be experienced if you have done little things to your needy neighbor because God is pleased by that. The joy of the Lord is the air we breathe, the beautiful flowers we see around us, the beautiful and wonderful things around us, the sunshine, the laughter, the rain, the hopes of better tomorrows and the gift of life are all joys of the Lord. We should thank God for all His kindness and love.

For ye shall go out with joy, and be led forth with peace: the mountains and the hills shall break forth before you into singing, and all the trees of the field shall clap their hands.
(Isaiah 55:12)

Joy comes from keeping God's commandments.
"If you keep My commandments, you will abide in My love, just as I have kept My Father's commandments and abide in His love. These things I have spoken to you, that My joy may remain in you, and that your joy may be full." John 15:10-11, NKJV

Let the righteous be glad; let them rejoice before God: yea, let them exceedingly rejoice.
--Psalm 68:3

Sorry, but I guess that the concept of church is misinterpreted. The original teaching of each church are now mixed in a new age era that is far away form the original path, so in my opinion, it's funny to talk about that.

I have to agree and disagree with this saying.

I agree that there is a correlation between what God might enjoy and what gives a person strength. One has the strength to sacrifice and provide for his children and be a good husband. I believe God will find that good. One finds the strength to be honest and humble even at his own expense. I believe God too will find that good. We all have inside of us noble and passionate characteristics that give us strength to do amazing things, whether we think it will please God or not. But, the fact that we were created with these abilities is in itself a testiment to God's creation and his joy that we use these abilities.

Now, I disagree as well. The fact that someone would strive to succeed and be strong simply because of the belief that it would please God should not be condoned. The person is not acting out of understanding but rather out of fear that God will disapprove the opposite action. Example: I see someone fall in the street. I really wanted to laugh with the other people but I believed God will frown upon that action, so I helped him up. I didn't help out of compassion or love, simply out of the fear that God would disapprove. So, if one receives their strength SOLELY from an internal understanding of God's enjoyment, I say this phrase can be detrimental to a person. It would teach him not to think for himself, but rather learn the rules of what pleases God and stick to the list.

Good comment. Too many people misunderstand the word "fear" when it refers to God. A more accurate translation would be a "reverential awe." I want to please God not because I fear him, but because I love Him and know He loves me.

According to focusongod.com, it was posted that "God says forget the past, enter into my joy and you will find discover my strength to bear your burdens and your scars. Here in Nehemiah we see God as a God of joy as he wants the people to celebrate. It is entering into the joy of God that gives us the strength to persevere in the midst of difficulties. Joy is not an option. It is an essential, if we are to succeed in the work of God. I enjoy what I am doing so much that at times I wonder if I am doing what I am supposed to be doing. It has certainly not always been that way."

the verse does not say that our strength is the lords joy. With that said, i believe the scripture was saying that God brings joy. that when we feel like we are so weak and depleted the fact that we know that he's there and that he loves us gives us strength. It's like God has a never ending source of joy. Knowing that he's there no matter if we're having a good day or a bad day strengthens us because we know he never leaves us. We know that at the end of our test, something good is going to come out of it. It's about endurance. The bible says the race is not given to the swift or the strong, but to the one who endureth till the end. and in order to endure, we need to know that God is there cheering us on and helping us along, and that in itself is what gives us the strength we need. God enjoys knowing that we trust him, and fully rely on him. And he knows how much we can bear which is why he takes us through difficult times....which in the end only serve to make us stronger human beings and christians.

I believe that is just one of many nonsensical phrases that some Christians use to rev themselves up into adrenaline-frenzied hysteria, so they can say they have been "saved" or "had a religious experience." It's like saying, "PCP from my dealer is my strength." Believing in that nonsense is just another way to get high. Try skydiving, sensory deprivation or mass orgies. Those are also ways to get high without drugs. I prefer to stay grounded in reality--That's my strength.

Amen to your opening statement! I can only give God the glory for the changes in my life. As a young person I was self-absorbed, self-indulgent, and my character was weak. I became a Christian later in life and although it didn't happen overnight, I can only praise God for my changes in attitude and the strength He has given me to make those changes. I still find it hard to resist temptation but it gets easier each day. No way I could have done it on my own, but only through His grace.

What does it mean to me ?

Truly it is something that others seem to say a lot and then utterly fail to explain to me.

I believe that it means something akin to

'The strength of my belief in (my/a/any/some) God/god/g*d/gods gives me the strength to face any/some/bigger obstacles in life.'

Which while heavily optioned, and for that I apologize, seems to cover all of the bases.

Essentially have faith allows you to face hardship by somehow thinking of the hardship as a test for which the belief will give you strength.

Most curious really.

very interesting question....

i think the strength in our inner soul make the lord happy... if a person is filled with joy, he receives the strength in himself. the strength makes something new to do which is related to god and thus god feels joy... (as all human creatures are the kids of god)...simple

It's okay so long as you don't confuse entertainment with reality!
I note with interest that the linked entertainment site and it's producer is linked to/works for the Billy Graham Evangelistic Association.

Do you know The late Billy Graham actually denied that the only way to heaven is through Christ, and that you DO NOT need to know/accept Jesus or his gospels to go to heaven? ("They may not even know the name of Jesus,.... and I think they're saved and they're going to be with us in heaven."
Therefore Jesus gave his life needlessly!
See...

Personally it has no meaning to me. I never have understood why anyone would want to not take resposibility for there own selves. Can we not gain strength from our own selves? Can we not know what we have been through and be greatful for our own strengths? I mean why would I work hard at getting through something and then give all the credit to something a book told me too. Would God not want us to see the best in ourselves? I would like to think he would. That he would like us to believe in our own ability to get through life. That he gave us all tools needed to get through all. I don't like taking the easy way out. I don't believe in handing over my problems or gaining strength from, but rather using what was given to me.
