The house is finally looking like a house. Does anyone know anything about Koi pond maintainence?

Pond maintenance can be really frustrating! If you already have a pond and you’re looking for a solution to constantly cleaning your pond or if you don’t have one yet and are thinking of building a pond, you’ve come to the right place.

It is very important to have a balanced ecosystem in your pond if you want to keep pond maintenance to a minimum. The most important thing to remember is not overstocking your koi pond. The second most important thing to remember is that that tiny 2" baby fish can grow up 36" if you have a large enough pond, but can also very easily be 24" even in an average large pond in just a few years. So be careful and remember you can always add more koi to your pond, and in just a couple years if you’re lucky, they will start producing eggs and you’ll have plenty of baby koi.

What kind of filtration / algae mitigation system do you have with the pond? If it is biological (live bacteria living in the filters eating the algae) then you just need to add bacteria once a month. If you get hair algae on a water feature like a water fall, then there is anti-floculant you can add to take care of it, but make sure only to add it when it is cool, like early morning or late night. There are other chemicals or biologicals that can take care of other algae as well. The most important thing to remember is that you don't want to over do it because it can harm the fish by poisoning them or causing them to suffocate because there is not enough oxygen in the pond.

Just like an indoor aquarium, a koi pond needs to be cleaned and maintained on a regular basis. Always be sure about your water quality - levels of chlorine, heavy metals, and copper especially. Confirm that you have a good filtration system. Regularly examine your koi fish to see if they are safe from diseases. Clean the pond every month, invest a pond skimmer to remove harmful debris, control the koi population, and maintain a well planned drainage system. I hope this maintenance list helps you to keep your pond fresh and healthy.
