The character Kenshin Himura, from the Rurouni Kenshin manga and anime - Do you think he is based on a real person from Japan's history?

We know that the character Hajime Saito or Saito Hajime was a real person, a policeman of the third squad of the special Shinsengumi police force. You can even see an old photograph of him on his Wikipedia page.

So what do you think about Kenshin Himura, otherwise known as Battousai the Manslayer? Rurouni Kenshin is so rich in historical detail, it makes you wonder whether perhaps there are historical legends or stories that have perhaps inspired this manga and anime on some level. Do you know of any, or of any other details that might suggest this?

I really don't think so. I don't think that there was an actual reverse blade former assassin from the tokugawa era. I just think that the creator had a great idea about having a killer who doesn't want to live his old life any longer.

There are many a great, legendary swordsmen out of japan, but I think Kenshin is one-of-a-kind.

I'm not exactly where I read it, I think a NewType magazine or Shonen Jump, but I have read that the character for Kenshin is loosely based on a famous swordsman who mysteriously disappeared as the fighting ended and the Meiji era began. There were rumors heard that the famous swordsman had become a wandering swordsman, as the show indicates, but in speculation it is also feasible that he died shortly after the fighting ended. It's hard to say for sure, but from what I've heard and read the character of Kenshin Himura is loosely based on someone who had lived and reigned as Battousai the Manslayer.

He is based on 2 real samurais during the Tokugawa era: One is Kawakami Gensai who is adept in Shiranui Ryu. He worked for the Choshu faction in favor to the emperor during the Boshin War. He was later assassinated by the Meiji government for not fully submitting to them. The other one is Matsubayashi Henyasai who do acrobatic skills with his sword.
