Hi I am a IT profestional I work as a Sun Solaris (UNIX) System Administrator. A System Administrator runs servers, in my case web, application, portal and other servers. I use mostly Sun Solaris 10(UNIX), but we also use Windows and Linux (Red Hat) severs. I tell you this so you know where I'm coming from.

Each Operating System (OS) has different strengths and weaknesses.

Windows is the easiest to use and get help with if you have trouble.
Windows is great for gaming and media (music and Video). It has the most market share. Meaning most people use it, as such there are more viruses on Windows then any other OS combined. It doesn't make $$$$ sense for programmers to make viruses for other OS's. This is 1 reason why windows has the most infections. The other is Windows concentrates on usability so that opens there system to attack.

Linux is the easier to use little brother of UNIX. It is great for running servers. I use Ubuntu at home I run Bittorrent on it and use it to watch the videos I download legally from the internet. Ubuntu is easy to install has a lot of power on even older computers. Install and uninstalling programs is easy.
The bad things are not everything works after install. The DVDs a lot of media files, flash, adobe acrobat, and plugins do not work. So you have to do an ap get to get them. Thats hard for a new person. But there is a lot of documention online at there site. One more thing all the things you did to get your DVDs, music, videos and other stuff I just mentioned, break when you upgrade. So guess what you have to do it again yeah.

I would still use windows and have a 2nd computer to run Ubuntu.
I am running both at home. Gaming on windows and internet surfing and file downloading on Ubuntu. I also have a Mac. You might want to try a Mac, because Macs are the best of both worlds the usability of Windows and the stability of Linux/UNIX. If you can do it on Linux/UNIX you can do it on the Mac because Mac is a UNIX (BSD Darwin) OS. 90% or the apps on Windows run on the Mac.

What ever you decide to do message me and I will Try to help.
I hope this was Helpful

As a user friendly and driver friendlier platform, I would go with Windows.

Linux seems to be more of a platform that would be accomodating for the more technically advanced users.

If Linux starts showing up on computers more and more, and is sold in stores. I would start to accepts Linux as a user friendly OS.

Windows is the platform I'm most familiar with so I use it most. Despite the security issues and sometimes buggy behavior I still use it most. I use a lot of Open Source software on Windows. Linux is good too but still has a ways to go for user friendliness on the desktop. I really like the Ubuntu desktop. It's user-friendly and easy to install/maintain. The transitional from Windows to Linux isn't quite seamless so Windows is still the go-to OS.

Windows is absolute crap. I run Ubuntu, and I don't know where lidyax got their information, but Linux is FAR superior when it comes to media players and drivers! I downloaded my Linux from the site, and out of the box it does things Windows can't (yet) dream of!

Linux takes less memory to run, it's WAY more stable, it (and all of its applications and programs) is FREE, and if you have problems with it, the solve is always a Google search away.

Tired of viruses? Get rid of Windows. As of this writing, there isn't ONE virus or spyware intruder written for Linux. At least, nothing that adversely affects the system you are running on. Tired of license agreements and forty-five steps to install something? Step up to Linux – with one click you can download, install AND run an entire program, hassle free.

It doesn't bother me a bit that folks want to pay for instability and poor (or no) customer service. The average person doesn't like choices, even though he or she will adamantly tell you they do. I don't like to be controlled by corporations, so I fly with Linux.

Don't believe me? Go to the link below my post, and read the testimonials!

Linux is getting better, but lacks on media player and drivers. In my school we use Mandriva Linux, but it is impossible to print with it and get good result. It also lacks good media player for DVDs.

Without a doubt - Linux! I have both Linux and Windows machines and I seem to spend most of my time waiting for Windows to download more and more security patches and then rebooting, It drives me nuts! IMHO once a Linux OS is installed properly it takes far less time to administer it than Windows. I find Linux is more user friendly these days than Windows. I personally use Mandriva and Ubuntu as my Linux of choice. Both are stable and easy to use. I also run 2 machine with Windows installed (XP and Windows 7).
The reason for running Windows at all is because I have clients that run Windows and I need to know how to fix problems on it. As an administrator it is not a good business idea to install Linux on private customers computers as I never get called back to fix things! It just works!
As SecurityFocus columnist Scott Granneman says "To mess up a Linux box, you need to work at it; to mess up your Windows box, you just need to work on it"
See this link:

Hope this helps
