I have a Top 50 list that I'll be publishing on my blog, but the Mahalo Answers community gets a sneak preview...My Top 5 films of the decade (2000-2009)

1. Mulholland Drive (2001)
2. There Will Be Blood (2007)
3. Eternal Sunshine of the Spotless Mind (2004)
4. Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (2001)
5. City of God (2002)

Went with "Mulholland Drive" at #1 because no film this decade was more intriguing, and no film demanded rewatching, further speculation and discussion than David Lynch's masterpiece. I think it's his greatest film, which is saying something, because the guy's responsible for a number of fantastic movies, as well as one of my favorite TV series of all time ("Twin Peaks.")

I love the balance, as well, between comedy and suspense. The movie can be SCARY and hilarious, almost at the same time, which both enhances its dream-like quality (because dreams, as we all know, can shift moods in a moment) AND makes it just an extremely entertaining way to pass a few hours.

#1 movie of the Oughts HAS to be: Spirited Away

http://www.impawards.com/2002/posters/spirited_away_ver2.jpg

This beautiful, artistic fantasy tale created by animation genius, Hayao Miyazaki is an anime movie that transcends nerdy boundaries and reaches out to people who can appreciate art, adventure, fantasy, and fun.

"Spirited Away" is the story of a young schoolgirl named Chihiro who is moving to a new home with her parents. Along the journey of their move, the family stops to rest at what appears to be a moss-covered old amusement park, but little do they know that it is the entryway to a mystical spirit world. Chihiro's parents become trapped in the spirit world, and she must make her way through the bizarre world to help save her parents and return to the normal world. Along the way Chihiro meets a wide assortment of odd characters, some friendly and sweet, others frightening or ridiculous.

http://thecia.com.au/reviews/s/images/spirited-away-8.jpg

SO WHAT MAKES THIS MOVIE SO GREAT?

It's unexpected, sweet, and imaginative. Once you get past the sheer wonder and beauty of the the artistic mastery of this animated movie, you find a captivating, thrilling movie with action, emotion, and laughs. Chihiro is a very lovable, but flawed little girl who must grow up very quickly to save herself, her new friends, and her parents. Just when you think you know where the story is going, the spirit world offers up a new and startling surprise to delight the audience. Action, suspense, and wonder permeate every last second of this picture. And even in the last scenes of the movie, you can't help but be in awe of how gorgeous the whole thing is. It's not a cartoon--it's artwork.

And not only is at an amazing movie-watching experience (that is extremely rewatchable, by the way!), but it's also an important film that bridges a gap between anime fanboys and everyday moviegoers who might be wary of anime. It's an intimidating genre that can be, at times, off-putting.

But "Spirited Away" is the quintessential "gateway anime" movie--Japanese animation at its best. The movie appeals to young, old, nerdy, not nerdy, action fans, romance fans, and everyone in between. I know that when I first was shown the movie I was extremely pessimistic about watching anime. Too weird, too boring, I thought. Then, within the first 5 minutes of the movie, my jaw had dropped and I was mesmerized by the beauty. Rarely ever has a movie kept me on the edge of my seat and captured my imagination so thoroughly. It was everything a movie-watching experience should be, and reminds me why movies are so great.

If you haven't seen it yet, you're missing out on an incredible mystical movie experience.

1) The Dark Knight

It has probably had the most impact on me throughout this decade. After seeing it and especially Heath Ledger's performance, I was impressed incredibly. I still firmly believe that even if Ledger were to not have unfortunately die, he would have still been greatly tipped as an brilliant representation of the Joker.

2) Avatar

I loved it! The 3D left me a little dizzy at the end but it did at a stunning look to the whole movie and has certainly set the benchmark for 3D movies in the future. The CGI, I will definitely admit, is the best of this decade and will probably not be beaten for a long time.

3) Shrek

It is my favourite children's cartoon after Toy Story (which is not in the decade) which had a element of emotion but essentially humour. I have probably seen it thirty or so times and would easily see it again. Problem I think now is that they have dragged the series out, way too much. I didn't even bother to see the third one after hearing the reviews.

4) Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

Essentially, the best Harry Potter film in the series and my favourite due to its comedy and humour. Doesn't work so much on its own because it is leading on to the two final films.

5) Pirates of the Carribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl

Lastly, I think that this was one of my favourites and made me grow a liking to the new Johnny Depp. A dark but quite funny at times film that helped kick off the pirate genre. I think that it's success has mean a lot of other films to be made with Johnny Depp - especially the upcoming (and likely to be a success) Alice in Wonderland.

Hurt Locker is the best single movie. Some say a unique view of the impact of war in Irag. I say it uses a war setting to explore the fear of routine over excitement.

Bourne Series is best series. Each movie builds on the other, each stands up to repeat viewings, and you get the side benefit of a world travelogue out of it.

Knocked Up is best comedy. Sophomoric humor, stoner humor, cougar humor, and a date movie for bonus points.

That is alot of movies you let me choose from. For 2009 Avatar is really in the top 5, but for the past decade?

Although, to be honest, we still have a full 2010 to go ;), so who knows what the coming year will bring in terms of movies.

For the past decade... hmmm... i'd definetly say:

Donnie Darko (2001)

Here is my top 5:

#5: Eternal Sunshine Of The Spotless Mind

This was a beautiful and emotional piece, and even more than that, this movie defied mortality and a hedge against the fading of memory. It brilliantly uses neosurrealism to explore the nature of memory and romantic love. The movie is both funny and thoughtful. No movie in the history has explored the nature of memory as well as this film has. It is one of the best romantic movies ever made, and even more than that, it is now a classic.

#4. Slumdog Millionaire

People simply fell in love with Slumdog Millionaire. Indeed, it is the true Cinderella Story. It is the underdog story, a story we have heard a million times. Yet Danny Boyle adorns this film with an unique storyline that sets in an unique place, with astonishing graphics, interwoven with a wonderful soundtrack, as well fantastic acting, and you have the 4th best film of the decade.

#3. Kill Bill Vol. 1

It is the ultimate action movie. It is action packed, intense, and the fighting is outstanding. Here is what a critic said about the film.

QUOTE

Tarantino’s kung-fu adventure soars as pure cinema, a sustained adrenaline rush that skips giddily from one unforgettable setpiece to another while quietly laying the groundwork for its quieter, more substantive, and dialogue-heavy second volume.

END QUOTE

#2. No Country for Old Men

A crime masterpiece that will be lauded for decades to come. It explores every aspect of the human nature. McCarthy's ferocious tale gives the Coens room to unleash their cinematic gifts, but keeps them from wandering too far afield and losing themselves in the marshes of technical prowess or easy irony.

#1. There will be Blood

It is a classic that you have not seen since Citizen Kane, Daniel Day Lewis's performance cements him as one of the best in the business. In a way it is like a mirror of the real USA. An intense epic about oil, family, faith, greed and destiny, and a a stark and pitiless parable of American capitalism. A must watch, and I say, the best film of the decade!!!!!!!

Before I put forth my recommendation, I just want to say that the previous ones were really good.

District 9 was by far one of the most brilliant movies I have ever seen in my life. The cinematography although not "new" was masterfully done. Action sequences were suspenseful, fast paced, visually stunning, and unique. The characters were written and cast perfectly, you loved some and it was easy to hate the one you were supposed to. When was the last time an alien, not in a Disney movie, really made you feel for it? The underlying social commentary about how we treat what we don’t understand, the capitalization on the poor, and how perspective changes everything was more than can usually be expected from this type of movie.

If you have not seen it you should. But personally I believe the best movie of the decade.

If I had to pick one, it would be:

Memento
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0209144/

I think thoughtful movies are the best. You'll watch it multiple times.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0vS0E9bBSL0

Second to equal would be:

Primer
http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0390384/

Primer is THE BEST sci-fi film. You'll be watching Primer multiple times as well.
