You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The Spanish, with expedition leader Hernan Cortes, were responsible for the downfall of the Aztecs. PBS has a nice graphical series about this.

There are many factors to consider in the conquest of the Mexica (or Aztecs).

The most clear and recorded viewpoint, is that they were conquered by the technologically and culturally superior Spanish conquistadores. However, its not quite fair to call the Spanish either technologically or culturally superior. Europeans had certain superior technologies, as did Americans. Culturally, they were different: Apples vs. Oranges. In terms of the actual warfare that took place from 1519 to 1521, the Spanish were clearly victorious. However the reasons for this victory are many. I'll list them in bullet form, rather than re-write a lenghty essay on an already well discussed topic. Then you may google any of my bullets and all sorts of information should come up.

1) The Aztecs defeated themselves due to the indecisiveness of their leader Moctecuzoma II.
2) The Aztecs oppression of surrounding nations caused those nations to ally themselves with the Spanish, making it possible for the Spanish victory.
3) The Aztecs over-estimated the Spanish resourcefullness, cunning and greed.
4) The native style of warfare was not stragically suited to fighting the type of brutal battles that Europeans were accustomed to fighting.
