I just got back from a holiday in Thailand, not as a back-packer but I gathered some experiences that may help you.
A good idea in Thailand is to start in Bangkok, then do a trip up to Chang Mai (very nice landscape) and then back down to Bangkok and end in Ko Samui. I guess since Thailand is a stretched country doing everything by bus is very complicated so flying is easier or renting a car. However if you rent a car be very careful, the laws are very ! strict!
I would talk to a Tourism Office near you and ask them what they think because they probably have more information.
