I think Venus Williams is the most enjoyable to watch at this point. Venus seems to have reached a stage in her career where she has a nice balance between enjoying her life and enjoying her tennis. Especially at Wimbledon and the US Open, she seems to really embrace the crowd and express a sense of joy that is compelling.
If it sounds like the decision was tough, it was. But it wasn’t tough because I feel like there are so many great personalities – I actually feel the opposite. While the talent in women’s tennis is very high, the sport is struggling from a terrible one-two combination – lack of personality and lack of a good rivalry.
From a personality perspective, the players either uninteresting or pretentious (not in the “arrogant” sense, but in the “pretending to be someone else” sense). Serena Williams is incredibly talented, but she always seems uninterested or low-energy when she is interviewed. Sharapova is the most “famous” of the rest of the group, but her image seems very managed – she seems more focused on who people THINK she is than who she ACTUALLY is.
More importantly though, the women’s game really lacks a good rivalry. The men’s game doesn’t have nearly the personality it used to either (McEnroe, Agassi, Conners, etc.), but the rivalry between Nadal and Federer has been very interesting to watch and kept the men’s game going without the personality it has had historically. The best “rivalry” (from a talent perspective) on the women’s side would be Williams/Williams - except that they cheer for each other off the court and don’t ever seem that upset to lose to one another. The game really misses a rivalry like Evert/Navratilova or Graf/Seles that could make up for the lack of interesting personality. Maybe the US Open will bring one to the forefront.

Another reason why I like her because she is playing tennis because she's really good at it and not because she's good looking like other tennis stars being idolized nowadays.

Because, well, I'm a guy. And also she has a great backstory, coming up out of war torn city to reach the heights of pro tennis.
I certainly don't think she's the best, but she's my favorite of the current players, for personality, story and style. She's the one I'm most likely to feel disappointed about when I hear they've gone out of a tournament.

• After a bit of prompting, this responder provided a good argument and some great references to back up the idea that - while we have some excellent players - a good rivalry could really help bolster the women's professional tennis tour!

I like Serena Williams more than the others. She's been a pro earlier than them making her the most experienced. I tried playing tennis back in 2002 hoping that I could be as good as her... ^^
Another reason why I like her because she is playing tennis because she's really good at it and not because she's good looking like other tennis stars being idolized nowadays.

Hi @fallen_angel21, A good start to a potentially winning answer. Can you add some more details, sources and information to back up your thoughts. When did Serena start playing, start competing at a professional level, what makes her career different than as you say - the other stars - specifically?
Best answer tip still up for grabs... :)

Well the reason why she's my favorite can be seen from the videos. It doesn't have that much to do with statistics or record, more the kind of person she is.
As you can see from the videos she's a charming, open, warm person. As far as I can tell (not knowing her personally!) she's committed to her career and takes it seriously, but she's not obsessed with success and failure. She's not any sort of sporting brat!
I think in the clips you can see her joy at winning her first and so far only grand slam, and the pain of dropping below that level, going out injured etc. But throughout it all she remains a lovely well-balanced person.
Also I find that doubly remarkable as she grew up through the troubled history of fomer Yugoslavia, living in a city that got bombed by NATO etc. None of that seems to left her with any emotional scars or bitterness, and she does seem to take genuine pleasue in being able to show the good side of her country to the world.
It's little like that famous Kipling quote that hangs at Wimbledon: "If you can meet triumph and disaster and treat those two imposters just the same..."
So it's really entirely subjective, but she's my kind of girl. :)

Hi @andromeda, Nice video, with good tennis strategy for any player. However, how about some more information about Venus herself and why you have chosen her as your pick as favorite female WTA player... :)

She's my favorite foremost because of her talent and competitiveness. I also like that she was not expected to get as far as she has. But she persevered and proved her critics wrong.

I'm not really a tennis fan, so I would only say Maria Sharapova because she looks great playing. Hey, I'm being honest. As for who I think is the best player, well I don't follow it that closely but Serena Williams has always had tremendous athletic ability and a great record. She might be the most gifted of them all.
