Is Andy Murray really the "true number one" as Eurosport's Simon Reed suggests?

John McEnroe makes Andy Murray and Andy Roddick the favorites for the US Open.

Simon Reed, a Eurosport writer, goes further and suggests Andy Murray is the true world number one, not Roger Federer.

Do you find this believable?

Andy Murray has a record of 50 wins and 7 losses in 2009 with $2,908,907 in earnings, with 5 titles

Roger Federer has a record of 42 wins and 7 losses in 2009 with $4,940,461 in earnings, with 3 titles

Just based on the records one might argue that Murray should be #1 because he's won 8 more matches with the same number of defeats. Looking more closely at the earnings sees Federer with $2 million more, despite having 2 less titles. How can this be?? He wins the most important tournaments, that's how. The majors carry so much more weight and prize money than the other tournaments. Plus the fact that Federer has been consistently great for so long, in my eyes, keeps him at number 1. Murray is great, but Federer is the best.

Really good answer. I am Federer fans and Murray too. But I believe federer is still the best so far but Murray still got young and the potential to grow still possible.

Someone may have won 20 ATP tour titles but not comparable with 3 major grand slam titles.
