You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

The article by Danny Sullivan (source #3) has a good second sentence which I'll quote to briefly answer your question. The author is explaining how the ranking algorithm for Google News is different from Page Rank of Google Search. His article is based on an interview with Josh Cohen, Business product manager of Google News.

Google News taps into its own unique ranking signals, which include user clicks, the estimated authority of a publication in a particular topic, freshness, geography and more.

A more in-depth report comes Sharon Machlis (source #4) in her interview with Krishna Bharat who is the founder of Google News. Mr Barat talks about articles being ranked based on "originality, freshness, quality, expertise of source and whether a lot of other sources around the Web are pointing to a particular article." She identifies "source's reputation" as important and summarizes Mr. Bharat's criteria: volume and orginality of content produced consistently about a topic, links around the Web, response of users to links that source on Google News.
