Tell me everything you can about Jack the Ripper... Why was he never caught?

One of the oldest mysteries that is lapsing into legend and myth, Jack the Ripper has always facinated me (because of the horrible nature of the crimes, but also because he was never caught).

Tell me everything you can about the case and your thoughts on why he was never caught!

Separate topics with commas, or by pressing return. Use the delete or backspace key to edit or remove existing topics.

You can leave an optional "tip" with Mahalo's virtual currency, Mahalo Dollars. If you are asking a difficult question that might require some research, or if you'd like a wide variety of feedback, a higher tip often leads to more answers to your question.

I have watched all the shows and read quite a few books.

However... one book in particular has convinced me that a top suspect would be Walter Sickert.
Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper -- Case Closed by Patricia Cornwell

After I read this book, I was convinced that it wasn't Aaron Kosminski, or the pathetic and sad Price Albert. This book is awesome and a truly great read! Get it Stephen!

I would highly recommend reading that book, or if you don't have time (being Daddy n' all) ... I found a great dissertation done based on the evidence that was gathered for the book.

Why was he never caught? I would chalk this one up to a mixture of the media having a field day with suspicions and leaking evidence, bumbling police officers and an unorganized team... along with politics of London at the time. This case brought to light the fact the money wasn't spread equally around the city when it came certain basic necessities (proper lighting and police protection to name just a few).

Also, police at this time didn't have the grasp they do today on criminal behavior, and fingerprinting was the only forensics known at the time... and it was in its infancy.

It's sad that the evidence to test on today has degraded so much or just plain disappeared from Scotland Yard, that it will never be proven 100%. What makes me happy is knowing that something like this could never happen again today and go unpunished. Thank you forensics!
