NCIS is one of the best written shows on TV. The characters play off each other very well. Gibbs plays the ringmaster in a circus of personalities. I love how he plays the part like a loaf of Italian bread, tough and crusty on the outside but soft on the inside. It makes him a multi-faceted character with depth missing in many other shows and characters.

The writers have conceived of his character as likeable and both Mr. Harmon and the director make sure that Mr. Harmon plays consistently true to his screen character. This is known as acting and often has nothing to do with one's true (off-screen) personality - as one can see from the behavior of so many Hollywood celebrities.
