Volunteering is a great way to get to know Israel. There are many free or nearly free possibilities, depending on your skills and interests.
The classic way is to volunteer to work on a kibbutz or collective farming community. Kibbutzim accept volunteers between the ages of 18 and 35 who want to live and work on a kibbutz for 2 to 6 months. It isn't completely free: registering, including health insurance and the necessary visa, costs about $500. Once you are on the kibbutz you work in exchange for room and board and a small amount of pocket money.
