I have a few friends that cut. From what we've talked about it, they say that they feel so much emotional pain that they just don't know how to cope - feeling physical pain distracts them from the emotional pain, and gives them something they can control rather than uncontrollable emotional pain. It's a few minutes where they're in control of their own emotions instead of everyone else being in control.
Though I know many people that cut themselves just to get attention too. They're the ones that show off the scars. Someone who does it for themselves usually tries to hide it.
My friend wrote this article about it - might be worth a read as it comes from the words of someone who actually did it http://news.deviantart.com/article/79873/

I had a difficult life. My brothers did too. But we did not cut or hurt ourselves. Our relatives, from my mom side of the family ,took care of us. Church took care of us. The Guidance Counselors and the Social Workers at school, took care of us. My mom took care of us. When I say they took care of us, I mean they talked to us. They listen to us. They treated us with respect and they kept us busy (working) and happy all the time. We did not have time to be alone and do nothing. We did not have time to think about hurting ourselves.

Teens cut themselves sometimes because they are emotionally troubled and can't deal. Other times, it is for attention. Some feel sensory deprived and cut to feel the sensation of it. Most of the time, it is because they are really freaked out at a very difficult time in their lives and that is a way of controlling one aspect of things.

In my opinion, teens cut themselves or try to kill themselves because they have emotional problems and do not know how to deal with them. I also believe that teens cut themselves because they do not have an adult who talks to them. Teens need to have people to talk to them about life and self-esteem. If they had adults that will talk with them and listen to them, they will not be doing things like cutting themselves. I had a difficult life. My brothers did too. I used to cut when I was 14-15 and my reasoning was to release pain. It felt like everytime you felt your skin cut apart pain would flow out of the wound. Many fellow classmates/peers who did it felt the same, doing it for the same reason. Yes I will admit it was partially for more attention, but that only gives negative attention, but ultimately it was a pain releaser...Hope that answers your question.

I also went through a really rough patch when I was 15 - nothing too major as I just didn't have the guts to do it, but I was drinking, not listening to my parent's, getting in trouble with the law, and basically just going crazy. I tried tried self-harm just a couple times, as I knew many of my friends did it regularly (one event went so far as to bring her things with her and do it in public bathrooms) and I thought it might be the solution for me too. I tried burning instead and It didn't give me the same emotional relief it gave other people, so I basically told myself it was stupid and didn't do it again.
It's hard to say what to do if he's threatening you - most likely he just said it for the pure shock value but if you feel like he might follow through with his words, it might be time to seek outside help.
Good luck!
