Obviously the best software to use with your ipod is itunes because your ipod was built to work with that software. Other third part apps don't work quite as well but can be used.
Your situation is particularly unique because you cannot install any apps to the pc you are using as it is not your personal pc. This means that your options are limited.
You can use sharepod. One of the features is that you can install it directly on your ipod.
http://www.getsharepod.com/
Found two LifeHacker articles that state that you can use Floola to copy to ipod, mypodder to download podcasts, Cdex to rip cds directly to your ipod and podplayer to play music on your ipod.

http://lifehacker.com/237986/hack-attack-add-music-and-movies-to-your-ipod-from-any-computer-without-itunes
Now, the two LifeHacker articles are not new. One is from 2006 and the other is from 2007 so I am not sure if these will still work. I looked but could not find anything more recent. Most third party apps require you to install to the pc. If any of the links in the articles don't work use these: -

Mypodder

Podplayer

CDEX

Hope this helps.

Are you using iTunes? If not what program is it?
What OS are you using?
If you are talking about Library files then you may not be using Windows. Windows uses mostly dlls instead. You need to try uninstalling the program and then reinstall. You can also try a different program.
Linux/Unix
Their are 3rd party apps in the Linux community. Ubuntu has a few in there catalog that you can download and install. Also Ubuntu can install as a program in windows if your not using Linux.
To stop the old files from showing, just change the directory that the program uses to a new directory and put the files there.
I can give you info if you give some 1st.

I wouldn't recommend anything but iTunes otherwise your warranty is of no use to you.
