Well, the official beta probably has some patch or something. Maybe something with WGA or something.
I'd recommend not using a beta - and a Microsoft beta at that - as your primary OS.
...well, you could consider Vista to be 7 Alpha...

It's here: http://btjunkie.org/torrent/Microsoft-Windows-7-Beta1-Build-7000-x86-DVD/46198c50ef8be9b74792e4ec4c2e493e7501ce7a3698

Even if MS puts it out on Friday, I think it would still be illegal to download, BUT, since it's a beta version and it's out for people to test it, I doubt there might be any consequences.

Edit: There could also be more errors in that version at www.btjunkie.org, so it would be better to just wait until Friday.

A few hints by wired.com:

#Windows 7 Beta 1 will be made available for a limited time during the day on January 9, 2009.

#It will only be made available to the first 2.5 million people to download the code. Demand will be huge, so prepare to act quickly.

#You will be required to register before downloading so Microsoft can give you a product key.

#The Windows 7 Beta will expire on August 1. You will probably be forced to go back to using Vista SP1 on August 1 (or maybe upgrade to Win7 Beta 2?).

#If you're upgrading, remember to back up your PC. It's a beta, stupid! (sic)

One would find it on various torrent sites (Such as: thepiratebay.org) by searching Windows 7 Build 7000.

I would also like to point out that some of these torrent versions of Windows 7 may in fact not be the true Beta 1 Build.

Too, many of these torrent versions quite possibly may contain viruses, trojans or other malicious files.

I agree about the viruses and trojans, but it's a version with which people would NOT work or do critical stuff. It's just for testing or taking a look at it. There will be more annoying errors than anything else, just like in any other beta versions of everything.

@pescina
It's not safe to assume that people won't use this as their primary OS.

Considering, Paul Thurrott just recently said in one of the Windows Weekly podcasts that it's stable enough that some advanced users wouldn't have issues running it as such.

Edit: Just clarifying... I didn't mean people would use the Windows 7 Beta 1 as their primary OS forever. Just during the duration of the beta.

Windows is rarely stable enough. :-D Some people MIGHT use it as a primary OS, but there will obviously be some restrictions that will prevent most users from actually using a beta version after the final version is out:
http://www.mahalo.com/answers/software/what-happens-when-windows-7-beta-expires

Those who do keep on using it will have to crack it and then get an update. Plus, most important of it all, I doubt hackers will spoil things by exploiting security holes right now, when they can take much more advantage later with the stable version. The beta version might have been leaked by MS:

Besides, the torrent file seems good enough, according to the comments.

MS may be putting this out of Friday, but as a software developer I don't feel it is right to post links to what is effectively pirated software.

If anyone wants to get Windows 7, get it from MS - please don't download illegal copies. Not only is it illegal, but its probably going to have viruses in it.

There's probably no real harm in downloading it via a torrent now, but it is most likely illegal to get it before it's been ok'd by MS.

As mentioned before, wait until 1/9 and you can legally download it here: http://www.microsoft.com/windows/windows-7/

It might set a bad precedent for a certain someone to request information on illegal actions on the Mahalo Answers site.

With Microsoft's official release, you might as well wait. With all legal information/morals aside, the risk for getting a virus with Windows 7 on a torrent site isn't worth not waiting what is now about a day. Also, on a torrent site, you can't really be sure that your getting the same thing that you'll be able to get from Microsoft in just under a day.
