Yes, though it will probably take another 10-15 years and will probably not be the exact technologies we know today. With VoIP, there will still be some kind of "line" that provides the internet connection, so the real question is, who will provide that line in the future?

In the works is WiMax or G4 for the world. Sprint, Verizon and Intel have spent billions and are building these networks.

A couple of years ago, when the earthquake happened in Hawaii and we lost all power in the Islands, the only immediate communication I had with the outside world was my plain old phone that didn't have an ac adapter. My internet service, my TV, my cell phone, and my cool five wireless phone set was useless.
