High quality words that are directly related to your product are the better measure, regardless of what they cost. Generally, big common words cost more, i.e. "hard drive", but are generally too abstract to be effective. It'd be much better to buy something specific to what you're selling, i.e. "Samsung Spinpoint hard drive".

The only benefit that you get from the abstract terms is higher traffic.

Is the conversion rate, higher, if you pay for the more expensive words verses a phrase of less common words?

Conversion rate will be higher if the search words most closely match the product you're selling. Therefore, more specific terms (and usually less expensive) have a higher conversion rate.
