Google Chrome OS fits in the operating system market as a secondary OS, mainly for Netbooks. Google has announced that it has no plans in the near future to destroy your need for Mac OS or Windows, but eventually, we will get to the point when this might happen. For now, though, they have an OS which is ahead of its time. Only time will tell if it fits in as a true OS, or just a shiny gimmick for the netbook manufacturers to build in.
