In Word, click on Tools | Options | View | check the "Drawings"
box and uncheck the "Picture placeholders" box | OK. If the problem
persists, then reduce or turn off hardware acceleration in your display
driver by clicking on Start | Control Panel | Display | Settings | Advanced and its under TroubleShooting.

If you have Word 2007, do this:

  1. Click the Office button.
  2. Click Word Options button (Word displays the Word Options dialog box).
  3. Click Advanced in the left-hand pane.
Scroll down until you see the 'Show Document Content' section.
  4. Uncheck the box next to 'Show Picture Placeholders'.
  5. Check the box next to 'Show Drawings and Text Boxes On Screen'.
  6. Click OK to close the dialog box.
