What's the market per-word rate for a gadget-tech reviewer journalist?

I'm looking to contract with a few professional gadget-tech reviewer/journalist to write reviews (500 to 1000 words) for my soon to come web publication.

How much does CNET and other publications pay their freelance reviewers? What's the average market per-word rate?

The technology news publication used freelancers for most of its channels, including Web development, computer help, Windows, Linux and e-commerce, reported editor Stephen Howard. ZDNet (CNet) paid a flat fee of $300 per story, with articles averaging 500 words.

Freelance fees vary according to your experience and ability, but the average freelance fee per 1,000 words is £500 for a large magazine or £375 for a smaller consumer magazine (data collected March 08).

The majority of magazines pay between $.50 and $1.00 per word. The highest maximum rate is $3.00 per word by Architectural Digest (the magazine's minimum is $1.00). Parade, which ranked 17, pays a maximum of $2.50 per word (minimum $1.00). Six other magazines, including ninth-place Redbook, have maximums of $2.00 per word. Lowest minimum rate is $.05 per word paid by Moody's Monthly, a religious publication. There are seven other magazines in the top 100 who pay $.10 or less as a minimum word rate, including Writer's Digest.
