Image macros as a technique have been around much longer than lolcats and icanhascheezburger, and there is actually no requirement to write like a retarded badger drunk on bad scotch. The term "image macro" originated on Something Awful forums as they had short text phrases one could type which the board software would expand into an image with digitally superimposed text. Usually it is used as emphasis to get a point across without using a lot of words (as we know, pictures have a thousand words in them).
Cat macros became very popular on imageboards like 4chan and eventually spawned what was called "Caturday". Then, sometime last thursday, Eric Nakagawa "found a picture on the internet" and started icanhazcheezeburger with it, bringing Caturday to the masses in a watered down and somehow lacking form that basically killed it.
So, to have the "perfect" lolcat, you will ideally have a picture of a cat no one else has (possibly because it is YOUR cat) in a funny or interesting pose, some witty text to go with it, an image editing tool such as Photoshop or theGIMP, and be in before January 2007. Anything else is suboptimal.

Is a good example of the form.
Bringing in pop culture or literary references is always fun and can really make an LOLcat into something special, but it can sometimes lessen the universal appeal of the LOLcat.

Is made of awseome if you know the Harry Potter movies, but if you don't, not so much.
The fun thing about LOLcats is there are no rules. So if an LOLcat breaks one of the rules, it can still be funny. So a pic with a long, grammatically correct caption like so:

can still be pretty dern funny.
In fact, my favorite LOLcat has a grammatically correct, but short, caption, and derives its humor from First Person Shooter games, and it includes DOGS.

What makes the *perfect* LOLcat?
I can't get enough of those laugh out loud cats, but I wonder: what do you think makes the *perfect* LOLcat? Is it the expression? The absurdity of it situation? The funny language? ALL OF THE ABOVE!?

A perfect LOlcat is a balance of a unique picture that's funny on its own, a funny caption, and bad spellink. It helps if the caption relating to the picture is unexpected, but it must still fit the image and add another layer of meaning.http://icanhascheezburger.com/2008/12/04/funny-pictures-rainbow-i-tastes-it/
