Both Ubuntu are OpenSuse are good distros for the Linux beginners. After you get used to Linux you can use them to explore Linux by compiling programs you get off the net to fill in the gaps of their precompiled software repositories. A distro is basically a package of precompiled software once you start compiling your own it isn't a distro anymore so the base distro becomes less important.
