I'm not in a position to answer this question fully right now. But needless to say visually impaired individuals us the same equipment and OS's everybody else does. It's the software that employs TTS (Text-to-Speech) or Screen Enlargement techniques that really makes the system usable. OS X on the mac has a built in TTS that's suppose to be pretty good and I'm not sure about the screen magnifier on that OS. On Windows there's about half a dozen options for magnifiers and TTS programs. As far as screen magnifiers ZoomText is my favorite and JAWS is the most popular TTS. Both which run between $500-1000. If she need simple screen enlargement Windows 7 has a full screen magnifier that replaced the old bar like magnifier at the top of the screen in Vista & XP. As far as pre-built and sold computers I'm not really sure and have to check. Ironically if she needs a phone and just needs email the new Iphone 3GS has a TTS and Screen Magnifier built in.
