I've been using AVG Free Edition for about three years now, maybe longer, and have been very pleased with the protection. The software has automatic updates - that you can adjust in the preferences - and does a very-good job of keeping my system safe. It isn't a resource hog, either, and runs just fine even on the older systems that I have lying around here.
