This is very subjective, but I'm going to throw in my 2 cents. These are also the "best" semi-pro cameras for around $1000.00 in my opinion.
I am buying a Digital SLR for my wife, Through my research I have come down to 4 cameras. The Canon 1Ti, XSi, Nikon D5000 and D90. I am looking for a semi-pro camera, as my wife has expressed interest in amature photography, so I wanted to get my best bang for my buck. I am leaning toward the 1Ti with the Digic 4 processor, the HD quality and faster speeds. However I am considering the D5000, the only issue with the Nikon is it's old tech, but it's still a nice camera. The D90 and XSI are cheaper and I could get a nicer lens if I wanted to. I will probably get here the 1Ti but it is a very hard decision. The nikons have slightly cheaper glass right now then the canons but the canons are a little cheaper for the cameras. I would go hold a camera see how it feels and get the one you like. All the specs are close to the same for these cameras. Hope this helps.
