Social bookmarking is a way to share your research and good finds with others and to find what others have dug around for. You organize your bookmarks with tags, organize them into tag groups and decide if you will share them with others or keep them private. You can also enter comments on your bookmarks. You can display your tags as clouds on other web pages.
You can subscribe to tags, so you get an RSS feed of new links with subscribed to tag applied. This can be helpful for things like getting new interesting links for your managed Mahalo pages.
If you see a pattern of links coming from an individual, you can subscribe to their link activities, or simply add them to your network and click to see their tags when you are on the social bookmarking site.
I started making use of Del.ico.us, now Delicious, when I was working on team projects in school. We made a unique tag and watched that tag to see others research finds. I continue to use Delicious today. I have buttons on my browser to bookmark quickly. I list all my Mahalo pages and I collect new links for my Mahalo Pages.
I have recently joined Twine. Twin is a Web 3.0 based social bookmarking site. You submit links to be published within a Twine which has members. I have submitted my hobby related pages to appropriate Twines. I'm following other Twines for new information for my Mahalo pages.
Here is my new Delicious profile that I'm setting up to support my Mahalo efforts.

Social bookmarking (or tagging) allows web pages to be saved and tagged (tag words) so that others can see what is of interest (going to the trouble of tagging indicates some level of interest). There are several dozen bookmarking services (see list on this link) http://www.toprankblog.com/tools/social-bookmarks/.
