Drupal and Joomla are probably the two biggest open source CMSs out there. My personal experience is in using Joomla, and I find it easy to use and able to do what I need it to pretty much all the time. I know that Leo Laporte recommends Drupal and I trust his judgment as well.

Here are a few articles that discuss the advantages and disadvantages and compares both. Some are a little skewed but I've included ones that skew to both sides.

http://buytaert.net/drupal-vs-joomla-performance

(All of these are from a simple search, you could likely find many more.)

If you're not interested in either Joomla or Drupal, check out Open Source CMS for a few others that might catch your eye.
