What is Joomla's closest competitor?
I am researching different CMS options for a media client who publishes a robust information, research, and discussion board site for its readers. Additionally, they have a print publication, events, a Job Site, and Marketplace for reselling products and services. They already have two e-commerce solutions in place, multiple email newsletters, and no list managment strategy so there is an eye towards creating personalization on this website.

Drupal and Joomla are probably the two biggest open source CMSs out there. My personal experience is in using Joomla, and I find it easy to use and able to do what I need it to pretty much all the time. I know that Leo Laporte recommends Drupal and I trust his judgment as well.
Here are a few articles that discuss the advantages and disadvantages and compares both. Some are a little skewed but I've included ones that skew to both sides.

(All of these are from a simple search, you could likely find many more.)
If you're not interested in either Joomla or Drupal, check out Open Source CMS for a few others that might catch your eye.
