Runescape is a pleasant diversion. I've had great time playing with my son, but haven't played much recently. There are several good reasons for giving it a try:
(1) trying it is free. As a free player, you get a good subset of the total functionality, enough to keep you interested for months. If you find that you are not interested, you're done, having incurred no costs. If you are, the $5 per month charge is not overwhelming (it may be a bit higher these days, but I'll still paying the $5).
(2) The game is technically impressive in terms of its instant chat capabilities over a hundreds servers, each hosting hundreds or thousands of users. (I wish we could develop such engaging and robust solutions for education).
(3) The quests and mini games can be fun and challenging. I'm a big fan of problem solving - the only way to learn how to solve problems is to solve problems (and this world needs more problem solvers).
(4) For young kids especially, they can pick up interesting tid-bits of knowledge about the widest array of topics, such as metallurgy, fishing, etc. These bits of information show up in real-life conversation.
(5) It's fun!
- Give it a shot and decide for yourself.

I forgot to mention another thing that I like about the application - it is constantly evolving and improving in response to user input. This is fairly rare among software providers and should be acknowledged when it occurs.

I played it for awhile (maybe 3 or 4 months) last year (2007) and found that the quests were a bit too strange for me to follow. I was basically stuck at a quest. If you are not doing quests, then you are leveling up which is boring and makes the game not very playable. That, of course, is only my opinion.
