The grand daddy is Project Gutemberg, http://www.gutenberg.org/

Every book in Project Gutemberg is ready to be read from an Amazon Kindle. There are other sites that reformat these into the unencrypted Kindle format (AZW) but that really isn't needed.

You are going to hear a lot of noise about Google Books, but that is a completely different deal. Google Books is aimed at getting as many books as it is legally possible, not just public domain books. They are actively making deals with content owners to post their books online in exchange for ad revenue sharing. They just made a deal with Sony to allow their eBook reader direct access to over 600,000 books that are out of copyright, all older than 1923. That's not the same as public domain, but it is ton of books and cannot be ignored.

There are plenty of sites.

http://gutenberg.org - is a very good site, although I'm not a fan of their site layout. Great for finding .txt ebook files.

http://manybooks.net/ - is a great site, especially if you have a pda, iphone, kindle, or other type of ebook reader. They carry books pre-converted into many different formats. I really love this site because not only do they carry classics, but they also carry books that were published post-1930s.

Your public library also allows ebook check outs. Check out your local library's website, there should be an option to find ebooks. Many libraries work through http://www.netlibrary.com/ to allow users to download ebooks for a temporary time, much like a real library.

I hope this helped you.
