I have actually donated small amounts of moneys to several non-profit groups the flock project being one of them.
I think it is important that we donate to these organizations even if just extremely small amounts. It shows that people are willing to help others and it might end up being the *tipping point* for some organizations that are actually doing some good in the world.
Would I donate to the WikiFoundation in particular?
Probably in the future but not now., My budget is stretched as it is right now. They do do some good.
They run wikileaks for one which is a outlet for wistle blowers to have a place to show documents that some large companies would rather fire them for if they ever showed them in a public forum.
They run wikipedia which we use everyday.
They are dedicated to opensource projects and allow neutrality within their system.
Would I donate to them?
There is a strong possibility i just might.

I think people who simply read and utilize the information regularly, however, should consider donating; its hard to deny the impact Wikipedia has had in the recent past.

You pay by contributing, assuming you do so without vested interest. The phenomenon should stand on its own, or if some foundation wishes to support it without prejudice.

The Wikimedia Foundation has been asking for donations at the top of Wikipedia. Do you plan to donate?
Thoughtful answers please. What do you think about Jimmy Wales' letter to the public? Do you think many users will give their money? Should people who use Wikipedia often feel obligated to give to the Foundation?

• I've selected this answer because I think it covers the importance of supporting organizations that provide us with what we ordinarily take for granted. It also mentions how the Foundation is more than just Wikipedia. Times are tough, however, and donating may not be feasible for most of us now.

Personally, no I will not "donate" to them. I think it's a bit tacky to ask for donations to pay for a business like this. They should re-write their business plan so that they can pay their own employees, rather than begging for money. I have no problem donating to causes that are bettering our world, like helping the homeless or assisting disabled veterans, but this is a bit too much for me. I think their will be people who donate to them but it's really a shame that they feel entitled to these donations.

You may not feel compelled to donate, but if you use the site you should pay up. You know, their business plan is a non-profit one so even though they aren't helping homeless, they are doing something VERY IMPORTANT for the world. They provide a place to expand the overall knowledge of this world through a portal that allows everyone to include their words to do so. Wikipedia (and Wikiquote, Wikimedia, et al) is truly a visionary idea that is worthy of support simply because they are providing the world an encyclopedia that is never out of date. But that is my opinion, and not meant to squash yours, which is valid in its own right.

I find that interesting, but I consider the Wikipedia to be free in the same way as NPR and the local library. I see no problem with donating to other causes over the Wikipedia, however.

As someone who contributes information regularly (in addition to simply viewing), I don't feel compelled to donate; I feel like giving my time has been my 'donation', so to speak. I think people who simply read and utilize the information regularly, however, should consider donating; its hard to deny the impact Wikipedia has had in the recent past.

I agree with the last two, this is something that needs to be community-driven (as opposed to community drivel?) You pay by contributing, assuming you do so without vested interest. The phenomenon should stand on its own, or if some foundation wishes to support it without prejudice.

I have donated in the past because at best I am a passive user of Wikipedia. In the same way that I donate to my public library (although my property tax already endows it), I feel as though I can further strengthen my community and the online community by a free and educated sharing of information. I don't have children, but I still buy raffle tickets to help the school system. The Wikimedia Foundation is the same vital cause in my mind and for my daily life. It opens what were elitist doors to the populations of developed countries. It is one of the wonders of the internet world.

I have donated to them in the past only because I used their website almost on a daily basis. However I don't trust Jimmy Wales anymore and I don't trust the volunteer curating that takes place for such a large repository of information. Let's not forget Wikiality

Interestingly, I had just read Jimmy Wales' letter not long before seeing this question. I'm currently in the process of deciding if I should donate or not. I do use Wikipedia quite often, and I find it helpful so I feel I should contribute in some way. However, I think that they could find more creative ways of funding.

Not really. As a college student, I owe a lot to the Wikipedia (not because I cite it, but because it allows me to explore so much more than my classes offer, and it is extremely useful as a starting point for research), but I also owe $27,000 (so far) to a bank for my tuition, so I don't think I can justify a charitable donation just yet. However, once I actually have a job, it will be something I seriously considered, to give back to the database that has given me so much.

There are people who donate to this cause, so you do not have to feel obligated to donate. There are people who really appreciate Wikipedia, and are able to make larger donations. If you are one of those people than you should donate, yet if you are not one of the people who use it a lot, and are not using it, then you should not sweat a donation. I believe it boils down to your belief. It's similar to people who give tips on this site, since you can tip people a dollar here or there, just imagine if everyone donated one dollar to the Wikipedia who used it, then they would reach their goals faster. Just think about it this way, people used to pay hundreds of dollars for an encyclopedia set, now Wikipedia provides it for you for free without having to have a large shelf of books that need to be updated. You may not be able to donate today, for whatever the reason, but maybe someday you will. If you cannot donate today, there is always someone who will be able to donate, so you should not feel obligated or bad about using the service without donating, but it's definitely something to consider if you use it a lot, or feel that you have greatly benefitted from using it.

I suppose, if Wikipedia's "life" were to become in peril due to a lack of funds, I might consider giving money, just based on the frequency with which I use the service.
