Is there an extra monthly fee with the Verizon Droid, similar to the $30 a month they charge for the blackberry?

Yes, to get any of the new Verizon Android phones, you must sign up for a data plan. The cheapest one is $30, but right now, they are offering a 20% discount on those plans if you order online.
