It is possible. First, you need to make sure the correct touch pad driver has been installed.
It is available from driver CD. Alternatively, it is available from
http://support.dell.com/support/downloads/download.aspx?c=us&l=en&s=gen&releaseid=R176423&SystemID=INS_PNT_PM_1525&servicetag=&os=WLH&osl=en&deviceid=14029&devlib=0&typecnt=0&vercnt=2&catid=-1&impid=-1&formatcnt=1&libid=17&fileid=239968

Once you have the correct touchpad driver installed, you can access it as follow:
Windows Vista
- From the Start menu, select 'Control Panel'.
- Click on 'Mouse' in the 'Hardware and Sound' group to open the 'Mouse Properties' dialog.

Windows XP
- From the Start menu, select 'Control Panel'.
- Click on 'Printers and Other Hardware'.
- Click on 'Mouse' to open 'Mouse Properties' dialog.

In the Mouse properties, there should be an option to turn off the internal trackpad. As I don't have Inspiron 1525, I am not able to advise you specifically.

@lesliec - if you go to Control Panel - Hardware and Sound - Mouse, does the mouse properties look like the following image?
The mouse in Dell Inspiron 1525 uses synaptic driver.

@lesliec
There is a disucssion at Dell forum regarding missing touchpad disable option.
http://en.community.dell.com/forums/t/19224746.aspx
The poster managed to bring the option back by reinstalling the driver from the CD.
Let me know how it goes.
