The salesperson is wrong. BES is a proprietary connection between a Blackberry client and server. RIM _has_ made a client available for some devices other than its own Blackberry models (including Nokia's E-series S60 business phones), but it has never been released for iPhone. You can validate this at the Blackberry site I included in the sources.
It is unlikely to be developed for iPhone in the foreseeable future as Apple have not opened access to all the necessary elements of its OS to developers.

Talk to your sysadmin to see how you can set this up. You can ask and see if there is ActiveSync for your company, or probably ask if he can just set up a simple IMAP email setup which works very well on the iPhone

If you are just trying to get your email from exchange to your phone, iPhone supports both IMAP4 and POP3 so you can go that route.

iPhone 3G compatible with BES (Blackberry Enterprise Server)?
Salesperson at AT&T wireless store said that the new iPhone can be connected directly to a BES without having to use ActiveSync via MS-Exchange. I've looked into this a bit on the web but can't find any information supporting that this is possible. Anyone know "for sure"?

There is no BES available for the iPhone. Its just simply not possible. The 2.0 update did enable Microsoft Exchange support, so chances are your company might have that. Talk to your sysadmin to see how you can set this up. I'll go one step further. Without a 3rd party application, there will NEVER be a way for you to do that. Apple doesn't want it, and RIM would never approve it. If you are just trying to get your email from exchange to your phone, iPhone supports both IMAP4 and POP3 so you can go that route.
