I have a Garmin Nuvi 770. It's great for many things. I never look for what you are looking for; but, I just gave it a try. Playgrounds are listed under Parks under Attractions under Points of Interest. Also, you can add your own points of interest files if you can find the information. I don't know how well the country is covered, it found a lot of playgrounds in New Orleans.

If I were you I would also wait till around christmas HSN (Home Shopping Network) Usually has some REALLY good deals, I bought one for like $150 and got a second one free (which I turned around and sold for $160 and made $10 on).
You could also use Mapquest or Google maps before you leave and look on your route and see where some parts are you could stop at (I would rather get the gps device easier then having to plan your whole trip).

I'm considering a GSP system, probably Garmin, but I have a question.
More than likely I have many, but this is the only question I can think of right now:
Can you get a car GPS system to tell you where things like playgrounds, rec centers, even road-side picnic tables are?
I recently went on a few road trips with my 3-year olds and decided to stop every 1 1/2- 2 hours to eat or just to get out and let them run but I couldn't find this information on maps or on the internet sites I found. The only places I could find were the 2 state welcome centers which had very nice picnic areas, but I was wondering if there is a way to get good, reliable information via a GPS unit.
I don't have an iphone, nor do I have any type of cell phone that gets maps or images (and I don't want one right now), so I believe a separate GPS unit is what I'll need.
Thanks!

On a gps unit, yes they have sections you click and it will show nearby parks(theme and other) returants, schools, gas stations...TONS of stuff, the only problem is you need to make sure that your system is updateable (mine didnt have a lot of the new roads that were put in or busniess that closed would still be shown). If I were you I would also wait till around christmas HSN (Home Shopping Network) Usually has some REALLY good deals, I bought one for like $150 and got a second one free (which I turned around and sold for $160 and made $10 on).

Thanks for the suggestion about updatability.
I tried to find places on Mapquest and Google that had playgrounds, but got no returns. It got frustrating and I started to think that maybe I may need to bite the bullet with a GPS unit. I'm glad to know these should be able to find things other than restaurants and gas stations.
