I would suggest Windows as an operating system. Why:
* cheaper hardware
* more choice
* more free software
* Lot's of good books for Windows noobs

I would suggest Windows. But that is only in the context of your question. Windows is easier and is supported by most software, which is itself a vast advantage. Macs are somewhat memory hogs. Personally, I would recommend Ubuntu. Small, memory efficient and free.
