I would have everything encrypted to prevent the billions of dollars in losses due to hacked computers, etc.
I would also make pop up ads, flash ads, and audio ads illegal.
I would make W3C compliance mandatory.
Finally, I would have switched over to IPv6 and secure DNS.
Oh, and did I mention net neutrality? I'd work that in too.

So, yeah. Things that are kind of unachievable seeing our human history, and society, but one can always hope :)

I think I would also have tried to embed security into email to minimize spoofing and into web pages to minimize phishing. Of course, social engineering is very difficult to make idiot-proof.

If you could start the Internet over circa 1994 days, what would you change, and why?
How would you change the Internet, if you could start it all over? What would you change about it? What would you make differently. Imagine you have one giant reset button that would start the Internet all over.

Two things that I have personally had to deal with are ISPs and Security issues. So, although I'm not technically savvy enough to achieve these, I'd want to create some architecture where there won't be a profit-hungry ISPs (don't know how that would work, but it's a wish); and I would have it built in a way that freedom/privacy are much more protected than they are right now. So, yeah. Things that are kind of unachievable seeing our human history, and society, but one can always hope :)

I think I would have made better choices for domain names. No country specific ones, but .xxx for sure to divide out the porn into its own easily blocked (or easily found) domains. I'd have tried to create a domain naming convention that would make it easier to find things. Domains like .search, .info, in addition to the .com, .edu. Now, it takes a committee too much time (and probably too much payola) to develop these. Also, there is inertia towards not changing things. I think I would also have tried to embed security into email to minimize spoofing and into web pages to minimize phishing. Of course, social engineering is very difficult to make idiot-proof.
