Search engine bots love content, so you want to get as much of that as possible out. If you have a completely flash or AJAX site (which I do), you're going to want to put some content in your source code, such as in the meta tags. Some applications of mine are completely javascript and AJAX, so there is no real content on them at all - the common 'web application'. However, I have meta tags with title, and description, which the search bots can read, and so my websites are still searchable, and I do get traffic from search engines.
I would try to stay away from the meta 'keyword' tag, as this can be dangerous these days with so many people trying to rig search engines by using unrelated keywords (sites like Google may penalise you if it thinks your keywords are unrelated to your site, which is may look like if you don't have much content on your site but only javascript - remember a lot of adverts are javascript!)

If a website does use Ajax, Flash or JavaScript, is there a way to make it more accessible to search engines?
