I've only used Joost and Boxee. Joost, back a few years ago was an app you downloaded. Now you go to joost.com and navigate their website, like hulu.com or fancast.com.

Boxee is an app which is in alpha state of tWhenesting. If you have a mac or linux system, you should be able to register at boxee.net and download the app. If you have a windows machine, check with the site. I had sign up for the limited windows alpha release then I waited for about a month before I got the link from boxee to download it. Please note, as of this week, boxee will be removing hulu.com as one of their content providers.

Joost is basically set up like hulu; You navigate or search to find the programs you want to see. The click on show you want to watch. You can either go with the player on the web page or go full screen

The speed of your internet connection will determine the degree of quality of the video. However, the video is compressed with certain amount of pixelation (aka little blocks in the picture) or artifacting. The sound quality for the most part was decent. Though I didn't view on a 5.1 surrond system but rather high quality altec lansing computer speakers.

I would say joost is comparable to hulu and the other services with more material from Warner Bros, which is content partner.

Boxee is an app which should be in set top box. That being said, the experience with the interface is very good. To get its content, basically "scrapes" off from various websites, like joost, cnn, comedy central and the like. It does audio, video, photos and will stream video including netflix movies if you have an account.

Boxee works best with macs and interface is designed to work with a mac remote. You can access your media on from your home network. On Win XP, you use either your mouse or keyboard.

Considering it's only in an alpha release of the software, it's very well thought out. I'm certain with the feedback they're receiving, boxee should flesh out quite nicely.

So joost is a place to watch content. Boxee is an app which can get content. I hope this helps with half your question.
