Twitter originally had the 140 character limit because they focused purely on using SMS to interact with the service. SMS has a limit of 160 characters, and Twitter usernames are 15 characters long, plus a colon and space are included with Twitter SMS messages.
After a while, Twitter caught on with users who used Twitter.com or Twitter through IM (which is gone now). Everyone realized that you can write so much in just 140 characters. It simplifies what you're trying to say. Limiting Twitter to 140 characters makes it bearable to keep an eye on all day long, depending on the number of people you follow.

I think the idea is "micro-blogging", although I've always found terms like that a bit pretentious :s
Obviously if you need more room for your tweets, you can just split up what you want to say into sections :)

Twitter is a site where people can post bits of information, facts, links, or just anything they want in 140 characters or less. I think the idea is "micro-blogging", although I've always found terms like that a bit pretentious :s
