Up until two days ago the answer would have been "not very". After 2 different Trojans snuck past Windows Firewall, Windows Bitdefender and Avast Version 4.8-1335, as well as Malwarebytes and SUPER Anti-Spyware I decided to do something about it.

I downloaded Comodo Firewall Pro and also Hotspot Shield (the software that makes one invisible on the Internet and which was used by Iranian recently to comunicate within and outside their country during the recent tragedy in Iran. Hot Spot Shield is also used by Chinese and other peoples living under oppressivd governments in order to safely surf undetected and communicate freely. Every time I sign on to the web I am assigned a different fake IP # in order to be on a VPN with Hot Spot Shield.

Comodo Firewall is an excellent firewall which keeps track of inbound and outboud traffic better than any Firewall program I have heard of. Comodo learns from me what each program I use is and what it does and whether I wish to alllow it to do certain things or not. Very reassuring. It also makes me invisible on the web.

Both of these downloads can be found at www.MajorGeeks.com, the only download site I feel safe using besides CNet.com. As a matter of fact it was a Security, Anti-Spyware Moderator at CNet who referred me once to MajorGeeks.

Update to my own "best answer": MajorGeeks.com does not always have the latest versions of software available as downloads. I have been informed by an active member of the Comodo Forum that I will need to uninstall my Comodo and then install a later version. I'm almost done with the process.

HotSpot Shield is causing a problem by interfering with my ability to access some websites. I can access a given website at one point in time but then not 15 minues later when I surg back. I'm working with the company's support people on this situation. From what I read on HotSpot Shield's Forum some others have ecperienced problems accessing theit web browser's home page or their web mail or other sites at random. i hae a feeling that wihin a week I will have had the time to reload my Comodo Firewall but will have ditched the HotSPot Shield. I am interested in the other software programs mentioned in other replies here.

I hope pretty secure. I've used an old Kerio that was freeware on XP boxs. And on my Vista system I'm using Blink which an Eeye product. Not sure to find out or put it to the test. I mean I'm sure I've run shields up and they've come back stealthed. But as a rule I'm behind a independent NAT Router Firewall on my Linksys and never expose my personal system directly unless I'm at a hotspot and only then do I imagine that real threat would be other users. In which case my software firewall becomes my primary defense. And of coarse I have UPnP shut off on my router other wise there's no point pretty much in having it. Hope that helps.
