It is as safe as Internet Explorer. It phones home every time you start the program to check for updates. To make it safer you do the same things as with any Internet connected computer. Install and keep any updated antivirus and antimalware program. Installing a software firewall can help but most broadband connection have a hardware firewall. So a software firewall is not needed. Software firewalls can stop software on you computer from using the Internet. If your are concerned about software phoning home you may find one usefull.
